Research Interests
My primary research interests are in the field of
statistical learning and computing. The objective of my research is
to develop practical data-analysis methods and corresponding
software that not only produce plausible models for the data but
also enrich our understanding of the complex underlying mechanisms.
Specifically, my work emphasizes the applications of regularization
methods in variable selection, nonparametric function estimation,
kernel selection, and predictive model selection by synthesizing
statistical modeling with optimization theories such as linear
programming. Of special interest are data of high dimension,
sparsity, or "large
p small
n" paradigm. Such data are common
in demographic and financial applications as well as in engineering
and bioinformatics.
