Teaching
“A
great teacher has little external history to record. His life goes over into
other lives. These men are pillars in the intimate structure of our schools. They
are more essential than its stones or beams, and they will continue to be a
kindling force and a revealing power in our lives.”
- The
Emperor’s Club (2002)
I have been lecturing Statistics 145 (an intro Stats class) for the past 2
quarters. It is great to be back
in the classroom. As you can tell, I am very fond of teaching. This class is a
GEC requirement that students with all sorts of majors, like psychology, turf
management, and even, music and nursing, take. Thus, the challenge in teaching
this course, lies in being able to convey the
statistical concepts and the mathematics involved, in a way that everyone
understands. I love this challenge.
Last year, I worked as a Teaching
Assistant/ Research Associate with Dr. Deborah Rumsey.
My research, mainly involved, developing a question bank, with datasets and
their oddities. Lecturers for various undergraduate Statistics classes, will be able to easily pull out datasets for their
particular needs from this “data bank.” The most challenging part
of this work, was figuring out, what all you can do with a dataset.
I had been a T.A.
for five quarters in my first two years here. The course for which I was a T.A.
was Statistics
145. Teaching is
always a lot of fun.
Back in India,
I used to tutor high school students, and children with special needs. Dealing
with children is very interesting, because they ask the most unbelievable
questions. They inspire you to view the world from all sorts of amazing angles.
