University & City InformationThe Ohio State UniversityThe Ohio State University was founded in 1870 as a land-grant college. It now enrolls over 58,000 students, including about 5,000 at five branch campuses. Graduate student enrollment exceeds 10,000. The university is organized into nineteen colleges and the Graduate School. Statistics is one of seven departments in the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Of particular importance to the Statistics Department is the presence on campus of the Colleges of Agriculture, Business, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Medicine, and Pharmacy. The University operates on a four-quarter system; the Autumn quarter begins in late September. Also see The Ohio State University home page. Columbus, OhioColumbus is the capital of the state of Ohio. It has a population of approximately 600,000, but the population of the metropolitan area exceeds 1.37 million. The employment base is widely diversified, ranging from heavy industry to light manufacturing, and from insurance companies to research organizations like Battelle Memorial Institute and Chemical Abstracts. The city center boasts a new shopping center, the state capitol building and a river park. It is about three miles south of the University and can be reached by bus. Summers are quite warm (80 - 95 degrees Fahrenheit) and sometimes humid. Winters are moderately cold (20 - 35 degrees Fahrenheit) while autumn and spring are quite pleasant.
