A few years ago, the department decided to ask retiring faculty give a farewell seminar. Faculty were welcome to speak on a variety of issues of their choosing, from technical aspects of their research to reminiscences about the department and their career. In this talk I will review aspects of my career. In particular, I will discuss some of the people who had important influences on my career in research, teaching, and service, and lessons I learned from them. I will review some departmental history from 1984 to the present, including a few things that many may not know or remember. I will conclude my talk with a challenge to the department.
