Using Your PC Account

Logging On/Off Windows

If there is no one logged on, hit Ctrl + Alt + Del, to begin logging in.

If someone is already on the machine, click Start. At the top of the start menu it will show who is currently logged on to the machine. To log on with your account click Log Off.

On the dialogue box that appears, click Log Off. The machine will then log off the current user and hit Ctrl + Alt + Del, to begin logging in.

Remember to log off when done.

Saving Files

On Windows there are several locations to save documents

The U: drive should be the primary location for saving files. For grads, this is your unix directory, so it is a great way to move files between a pc and a unix machine. Be careful, this directory will fill up quickly when saving images, videos or sound files. The My Documents folder is directed to your U: drive.

Saving to disks and CD is the best way to ensure you always have a backup.

It may be tempting to save files to the Desktop. Don't! Saving files here will slow down login/logout greatly. Users saving here excessively will be notified.

Feel free to store temporary files here if much space is needed, but this is not backed up. In the lab, files here will be removed without warning whenever we update the machines.

Using the Public Share

The public share on the PC server is available to the Macintoshes on the Chooser under AppleShare as Macserver, and then select Public. You'll have to log in with an account. (See the support staff if you don't know your account.)

To the PCs it is available as \\trad\public.

This is unlike the Public folders on the Macs for it is completely writable and deletable. This is not for permanent storage, and things may be deleted without warning. Thus, create a folder with your stat username and put your items in it. Delete everything when you are done with it. This will keep things neat, and provide a possibility of warning before deletion.

Sharing Files with Macintosh Users

To share files with Macintosh users, the data must be in a compatible format. This means it may have to be saved as a lower version of the software so that some of the older Macs in the department can read it.

From there there are three options to get the file to the Macintosh:

  1. Put it on a floppy. All department Macs should be able to read 1.44mb PC floppies.
  2. E-mail it as an attachment. If both of you are using Eudora, e-mailing the document as an attachment should work.
  3. Use the public share on the PC server. This share is available to both Mac and PC users as a replacement for the Public folder on the Mac.

Using Samba

Faculty and staff can access their unix directory by going to the Start menu, hitting Run, and typing: \\samba\username. This will bring up your unix home directory.

Of course, you can also use SFTP/SSH to transfer files as well.

Be warned, if you exceed your unix quota it will fail silently.

Adding Printers

Printers can be added by clicking on Start then Printers and Faxes. In this window choose Add a printer, click next three times, and then click Find Now. This will bring up a list of printers.

Printers are listed with the room number in them, as a grad student you will want to select lw341. You will want this printer as the default printer. Finally, click Finish.

Important notes regarding the printers.

* Additional paper can be found upstairs in the office.

* Do not use transparencies, envelopes, or non-standard paper in the Laser Printers, these will damage them.

* Avoid excessive printing; Print only school related material.

Connecting to Other Machines

From the Start menu you can launch SSH, or SSH and X-Win32, if you need X Windows.

There is also a chance that your machine has Outlook or Outlook Express installed. To configure Outlook or Outlook Express, read our documentation or see the support staff.

Installing Programs

For security most programs will have to be installed by an Administrator
