Lab, Web and Network Policies
Student Lab Rules
-
Please be respectful of others trying to do work in the
lab. Normal conversation is fine.
-
The lab is only for graduate students in our Department.
This means that people in service courses do not get access
to our lab.
-
If you are doing something non-essential on a lab
computer (browsing the web, or personal scanning), please
give up your computer on request to people needing to do
course work.
-
Do not download software onto the lab computers or modify
settings.
-
Do not lock a screen on a lab machine for more than
fifteen minutes.
-
The lab computers are not for background jobs, and jobs
longer than fifteen minutes should not be run on them.
-
Remember to log out of the machines when you are done.
Network Rules
-
Non-OSU owned machines are not allowed on the Statistics
wired network. OSU Wireless is in place for these machines.
-
Machines that are OSU owned but not in the continuous care
of Computer Support, may be allow access to the wired network
after verification of meeting OSU MCSS requirements. The user
is responsible for continued Department and University security
policy compliance.
-
No machines will be used as any sort of server. (Web,
FTP, mail, Samba, etc.). This includes peer to peer file
sharing.
-
No wireless networks or NAT routers are allowed. We have
OSU Wireless in place for mobile or personal machines.
-
Any machine in violation of these policies, or degrading
network security or performance, will result in either: the
termination of network for that entire office, or impounding of
the offending computer, until the incident can be reviewed.
Web Pages
Web pages on the system are not to have:
-
Things that violate laws. In particular, copyright laws
spring to mind.
-
Anything for commercial purposes. This includes
advertisements.
-
Things that get too much traffic, degrading network performance
-
Things that take up a lot of disk space. Allowances can
be made, but your account is first and foremost for school
purposes
