Statistics and OSU Accounts

There are several terms floating around, that are making the OSU network pretty confusing. This will serve to define them.

• Statistics
  The Department will provide you with two accounts, one for unix and one for windows. They will have the same name, and we suggest you use the same password for them. You can use our server for e-mail or forward it to your OSU account.

• OSU Account
  The University will provide you with a name.n@osu.edu account. This account provides you access to various services such as the Registrar's web site and the public labs. You can use this account for e-mail for forward it to your Stat account.

  You can obtain your OSU username and password one of several ways:

  1. Use a web browser and go to OIT's home page: http://www.oit.osu.edu and select the appropriate menu item.

  2. Call OIT at 8-HELP (688-HELP off campus).

  3. Go to room 025 Central Classroom.

Internet Access Providers

• HomeNet
  To log into HomeNet you use your OSU username and password. It is free, but often has busy signals and is slow.

• OSU Wireless
  OSU's wireless network.

• OSUWeb.net
  OSUWeb Net is an inexpensive dial-up provided by OSU.

• Cable and DSL
  There are various broadband providers. Time Warner, Wide Open West, SBC.

Wireless

OSU does not have a coherent wireless deployment. If you check out OSUWeb Net's site there may be more information on it. With a WebNet account you may be able to access 802.11b wireless in the classrooms.
